LAKELAND | Kathleen coach Irving Strickland has the power running game he's always wanted with senior Terry Bentley in the backfield.
George Jenkins coach Matt Thompson, however, said junior quarterback A'Treyu Farrior is the player his guys will have to keep an eye on when Kathleen (1-0) travels to play Jenkins (0-1) this Friday.
"He's quick and elusive," Thompson said. "We're going to try to contain Bentley, but I think that quarterback is the one that can make a play."
Farrior, who played wide receiver last season, threw for 183 yards in the Red Devils' season opener against Lake Region last week.
He played quarterback as a freshman on the junior varsity team and was moved to varsity last year because Strickland thought he had to potential to run the offense well.
Shutting down Kathleen will be a tough task for Jenkins, which gave up 488 yards of total offense to Lake Gibson in its season opener.
But the biggest hurdle for the Eagles will be to push ahead without injured starters Keke Wilson and Josh Bass.
Bass is out for the rest of the year after tearing his ACL and MCL in his right knee, and Wilson won't return until Jenkins plays Lake Region in a district match-up on Sept. 23 because of a high sprain in his left ankle.
Both players suffered injuries in the team's season opener.
"I've got two Division I potential signees out and it puts you out. It's hard," Thompson said. "But I think the group of kids we've got will be raring and ready to go."
