Farrior's TD Pass Leads Kathleen Past Jenkins

By MATT REINSTETLE
THE LEDGER

LAKELAND | It wasn’t a pretty game by any stretch, but the one play that was pretty turned out to be the difference.
On fourth down and 20, Kathleen quarterback A’Treyu Farrior went for it all and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass right into the arms of receiver Tony Black. The touchdown put Kathleen up by  nine points against George Jenkins with 9:44 left in the first half.
It was the first and only time either team reached the end zone as Kathleen defeated George Jenkins 9-0 Friday at Veterans Stadium.
Kathleen (2-0) distributed the ball as five different receivers caught at least one pass. Farrior completed 9-of-17 passes for 89 yards. Running back James McClinton led Kathleen rushing with 32 yards on 13 carries.
The steady rain over the past few days played a factor in the game as players struggled to find the traction they needed and resulted in penalties and missed opportunities on both sides.
Kathleen compiled 17 penalties for 117 yards, and George Jenkins had 9 penalties for 93 yards.
Kathleen coach Irving Strickland knew that George Jenkins has some talent and his team needs to be prepared for good teams in any weather conditions.
“All and all, you take wins like this,” Strickland said. “I’m going to take and not going to complain but we’ve got to get better, we have to fine tune some things. Once again, had too many penalties and that’s killing us, but we’ve got to get better and correct that and if we don’t correct that, we play another game like this, it might not turn out in our favor.”
The sloppy conditions benefited power running back Trent Rains as he led the George Jenkins offense with 18 carries for 161 yards. Rains got the start as star running back Keke Wilson suffered a high left ankle sprain last week.
George Jenkins (0-2) made the game interesting after Rains had a 49-yard run taking the ball to the Kathleen 34-yard line with 1:02 left on the clock.
George Jenkins wasn’t able to punch it in after a key dropped pass and an overthrown ball in the end zone gave Kathleen the ball with less than 30 second on the clock.
George Jenkins will travel to Winter Haven and Kathleen will host Ridge Community next Friday.
