Haines City Basketball Coach Takes On New Job as Volleyball Coach

LAKELAND | LaDreda Akins is adding a new title to her name: head volleyball coach at Haines City.

Akins, who led the girls' basketball team to the Class 7A state finals this year, will take over the volleyball program this upcoming season, she said Wednesday.

Akins played the sport at Haines City when she was in high school under the late coach Robin Wagman, who died of cancer in late February 2011. Akins decided to take on the position because she wanted to "keep it in the family," she said. "Someone within the system has always been there so I wanted to keep the tradition going," Akins said. "Coach Wagman was an inspiration to me." She takes over for Bonnie Salary.
