BARTOW | No one has to tell Haines City to hit free throws. The Hornets canned 22 of them and walked out of the Bartow gym with an early but crucial 46-44 Class 7A, District 7 girls basketball victory on Friday.
Hornets sophomore Jasmyne Brown finished with 13 points and 15 pivotal rebounds, but she also nailed six consecutive first-half free throws that helped stake Haines City to an 11-point halftime lead.
"A lot of teams know in order to make it to states you, have to hit those free throws," Haines City head coach La Dreda Akins said. "We missed a lot of free throws against Winter Haven but we have been practicing at a middle school with just two goals, but now we are back at Haines City High School."
The Hornets utilized patience on the perimeter and nifty ball movement in the first half to overcome Bartow's superior size advantage. Akins said she wasn't changing the Hornets' game plan just to negate Bartow's size.
"We play every opponent the same way," she said. "We have to do it. If you have to start making all those adjustments then obviously you are playing their game. We have to stick with our own."
Trailing 26-15 at halftime, the Yellow Jackets stormed back, outscoring Haines City 13-8 in the third quarter and eventually pulled within one, 41-40, with just 3:22 remaining in the game.
"It's good to have these types of game," Bartow head coach Richard Murvin said. "You don't gain anything from winning those games by 40 or 50 points. I just hate that we came up short."
Bartow (3-3, 1-1) was led by Zykeria Lewis with 12 points and Bailee Wolfe added 10.
Brekia Henderson and Jasmine Reddick each scored 11 points for Haines City (7-3, 2-0).
