LAKELAND | Bodies collide constantly on the basketball court. It’s the nature of the game. But one collision, in particular, propelled twotime defending state champion Orlando Dr. Phillips to a 69- 65 victory over Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer on Friday in the Class 8A girls’ state semifinal at The Lakeland Center.

With 1:17 remaining in the contest and Dr. Phillips winning by two points, Dwyer center Kai James was called for an offensive foul, and Dwyer received a technical foul as a result of a substitution mistake as well. Dwyer was whistled for having six players on the court, which is a technical foul.

Sydnei McCaskill made one of two foul shots, giving Dr. Phillips a 64-61 lead, plus the ball back.

“The play of the game was that charge,” Dr. Phillips coach Anthony Jones said. “The tech was bad timing for Dwyer. That last minute of the game was very big. We’ve never trailed that late in a game this season, and that put a lot of pressure on us. We made it out by the skin of our teeth.”

But the Dwyer kept fighting.

Kiandra Bowers’ steal and layup helped pulled Dwyer back within one point with 1:08 left, but Hannah Schaible made four straight free throws to ice the game for Dr. Phillips. McCaskill led Dr. Phillips (28-3) with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds, and Schaible chipped in 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

The contest was close from start to finish, with the lead changing hands 17 times, and neither team had a scoring advantage larger than seven points.

Dwyer senior forward Samantha
Glodis, who posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, said her team was determined to show Dr. Phillips they could play with them.

“We played the same team last year and they beat us by 40 points,” Glodis said. “Then we played them earlier this season and they beat us by 17. Since then, we’ve gotten a lot better, and they were expecting to see that same team (Friday), and we fought with them. I’m proud of us win or lose.”

With the win, Dr. Phillips will attempt to three-peat tonight against the winner of Orlando Colonial and Miami High tonight at 8:35 p.m. at The Lakeland Center.

“I feel like there’s pressure on us because everyone expects
us to (win),” McCaskill said. “But you have to give your all on the court because nothing is guaranteed. Each possession counts.”
